Types of Dental Emergencies

Below is a list of common dental emergencies that can occur. If you’re experiencing any of these, we ask you follow the below instructions and call us right away.

Cracked Tooth – Cracks in teeth can occur from grinding your teeth at night without realising, or from a sporting injury which caused impact. A crack can also be caused by eating a hard piece of food or biting on something sharp.

Once you come into our practice, our dentist will assess the tooth and will suggest some treatment options. It’s important to treat cracks as they can turn into something more serious like tooth loss or further damage down the track.

Typically, we create cracked teeth with either a dental crown or cosmetic bonding. Cosmetic bonding can be completed in a single visit.

Chipped or Missing Tooth – If you have a chipped or missing tooth, call us straight away so we can treat you accordingly. We advise you to gently place the tooth in some cling wrap and ensure you do not touch the root.

If you have a chipped tooth, we can address this with dental bonding which means we might be able to fix this straight away.

Root Canal – A root canal treatment may be required if there is an infection in the canal chamber of your tooth and gums. It is typically caused over time from plaque buildup which caused an infection.

Our goal is to get you out of pain quickly and treat the area as soon as possible. We will clean the area and remove any infection. We then seal it off to prevent future bacteria entering.

Tooth Aches – One of the most common cause of a dental emergency is severe tooth aches. If you’re experiencing a tooth ache, it is typically caused by a cavity or infection. We will either need to provide you with a filling or a root canal treatment depending on the cause.

Frequently Asked Questions

If the pain is severe, we ask you to call us right away so we can see you. You may want to take over-the-counter pain relief while you wait to come in. Make sure you tell us what you’ve taken and how long ago.

We will likely treat the tooth in pain with a filling if there is a cavity present, or if the issue is more severe, a root canal may be required.

If you’re experiencing pain and bleeding gums, we ask you call us so we can see you as soon as possible. This may be a sign of gum disease in which we will need to perform a checkup and clean.
Smile Creation accepts all private health funds and can process on-the-spot claims with our HICAPS machine. We also offer easy, interest-free payment plans.
